St Marylebone Parish Church is an Anglican church on the Marylebone Road in London. It was built to the designs of Thomas Hardwick in 1813-17.

FIRST FLOOR

The first floor of the church consists of old material with some damages. The circulation and layout is not at its best, but there is a lot of potential and things that can be improved.

CONCEPT MODEL

I created this concept model, expressing a form of structure directed from one side of the model to the other. This form is shaped like a ladder that is twisted, and is symbolising a path. It was made with the intention to guide your way from one side to the other.

CONCEPT
Taking you on a journey and guiding the way
The Marylebone Parish Church is an historical building, offering many different functions for people. They offer a lot of things, such as counseling, healing, NHS, girls school and the chapel.
My concept is based on these elements combined, it is about creating something that can guide peoples way, and help them find their path, and in general be something they can be inspired by.
I have created a structure that is inspired by my concept model "Path". The structure starts from the first floor, reception desk area.
It then goes all the way up the floors of the building, giving a sense of direction and lighting up the way for the visitors.
FIRST FLOOR PLAN - Welcome area
After researching the existing building circulation and the users, I decided to do some changes to improve it. I moved the existing staircase and opened up the welcome area by taking down an area of the wall.
SECTION_AA
From this section view you can see the new staircase that leads you to the basement floor. This is very successful when it comes to circulation and users.
VISUAL
The final result: Expressing a calm, social and welcoming church.
